Mareile Stoppel

My name is Mareile Stoppel, I offer Somatic Experiencing in Christchurch in New Zealand at Te Ara Sophia, a Healing Centre, and online for the wider community. My journey has taken me from Germany to Aotearoa many years ago and from Steiner based teaching and counselling to Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy. This trauma treatment has helped me immensely in my own  life and while supporting survivors of sexual trauma during the last 10 years. I am also trained in somatic EMDR, SRR and DBR and combine the modalities to offer specific trauma treatment, including for complex and developmental trauma.

I offer a warm and safe environment and like to engage with people of all walks of life. I support people to identify their strengths and to discover their unique potentials. I prefer working alongside people at their pace, valuing their own experience and expertise.

I offer a creative approach to supporting people to explore life, face their challenges and blocks, and find new perspectives. I draw on a variety of therapeutic interventions including Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Creative Arts and Sand-tray Therapy.

I have been working as a counsellor in agencies, schools and private practice with a diverse range of people. My particular interest is working with individuals and families to overcome trauma.

I am fully trained and experienced as a Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapist including working with developmental and complex trauma. For more than 20 years I have worked as an ACC registered counsellor in sexual abuse support services. This has heightened my awareness and sharpened my focus for social justice and respect. My long standing work at the Chch Rudolf Steiner School as a teacher and guidance counsellor has privileged me to work with young people and support them in their developmental process of transitioning to adulthood.

I am an experienced supervisor within my professional body and I mentor counselling students in training. As a group facilitator I am very involved in Otautahi Trauma sensitive Yoga classes. I have also offered training on issues of Adolescence, Non Violent Communication, Self-awareness and Awakening to personal growth. I am accredited to assist at SE trainings at all levels and can offer personal sessions to you.
